With great sadness, we share with you that Mickey Smith, an Honorary Director of Herzl Camp, died yesterday in Florida. All of us at Herzl Camp have been touched by Mickey’s care for Jewish community and children. We will miss her humor, her generosity, her kindness and her ruach.
Together with her husband Harold, the Smith’s have given generously of their wealth and wisdom to Herzl Camp and many other important causes over her long and happy life. During her life, Mickey took a particular interest in medical services and staff housing at Camp. Most recently, she took an active role in the planning and implementation of our current capital campaign.
Mickey’s involvement with Herzl Camp began with her children. Her son, Jim, was a camper and staff in the 1960s. Jim later went on to serve on the Herzl Camp board and as Camp Doctor. Mickey’s grandchildren, David and Eve, were campers and David was also camp staff. Mickey’s husband, Harold, served as Treasurer for many years in camp’s early years.
Recently the Smith’s reached a giving milestone with Herzl Camp – having giving over $1 million to Herzl Camp. In recognition of this long-standing support, Herzl Camp named our camp road “Mickey Smith Parkway” in 2010.
Prior to her death, Mickey established a scholarship fund at Herzl Camp and a fund to support pancreatic cancer research at Hadassah.
The funeral will be at Beth Jacob Synagogue in St Paul on Thursday December 30th at 1 pm.
Our thoughts are with Harold Smith today and with Mickey’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as her many friends and family. Memories of Mickey will be a blessing to all who knew her and all who share in her commitment to Jewish youth.
